![]() (we are not celiac, so I cannot attest to cross contamination) I did ask for a vegetable oil in a cup instead of butter which they happily accommodated. Thankfully this restaurant offers steamed baskets without gluten or dairy. ![]() Strangely enough, that is hard to find in this area. ![]() We were looking for places on our family vacation that offered reviews for outstanding seafood without being fried because of food allergies. Everything we had passed muster with the Cajun in the bunch, so you gotta know das real good!! For a tourist spot the prices are reasonable, and we hope to make it back at least once more before we head home. If you don't you'll wish you had! It's a very laid-back atmosphere with kind of a neighborhood pub feel. Skip the side salads and go straight for the good stuff. The remoulade that was served with the house made potato chips was pretty good, but the Creole remoulade was amazing and complemented the crab cakes, shrimp, and potato chips equally as well. Our crew had po-boys, crab and crawfish cakes, fried shrimp, and jambalaya. We started by ordering a loaf of French bread, split and toasted, and we were thrilled to find that it's the real deal! That's a taste and texture you can't get anywhere else, and we were told they have it brought in. My Cajun husband decided to see for himself. Reviews said this food was real Cajun and the sign on the front of the building assured us that the next real po-boys were 198 miles west. ![]() I didn't expect much from this dive bar but was resigned to stay because it was open and we were hungry. Those stairs are tough on old knees and the ramp is quite a trek too. Unimpressed as we entered we were told the downstairs dining room was closing but we were directed upstairs to the bar area. Then we stumbled across The Flying Harpoon 2. Most everything was closed as it was a Sunday night. After paying for our food and leaving it on the table we headed back toward Gulf Shores, searching for dinner along the way. We parked and got seated and ordered drinks and appetizers. On our first family trip to Gulf Shores we took the advice of some locals who told us we just HAD to eat at Flora-Bama. I cant even begin to imagine what the kitchen looks like, after looking at the bar. so when I wont even stay for a beer, you know it's bad. I am not a snob, far from it, I've been a bartender for 25 years and some of those years I worked in dive bars. I am not understanding the glowing reviews on all of the sites. I couldn't and I wouldnt eat at a place like this. Some very uncomfortable yuppie people, stood against the wall, nervously sipping their Miller lite beers. It was standing room only and lemme tell you, a surly looking clientele. And still, we walked past the full bar, to the back, where there were only about 4 tables. Immediately upon entering, your nose is hit with the smell of urinal cakes, stale beer and old cigarettes. We were greeted by a drunk smoker, who mumbled something we couldn't understand. It took some convincing, because we often drive by and see surly looking characters smoking on the porch, the place looks like a dump. After reading the reviews, I finally talked the hubbie, into dinner at the flying harpoon, the one in gulf shores.
